Today is Earth Day so why not talk about earth? Earth is one of the four elements that I believe in. This one is the most obvious since it represents nutrition.
Earth is what provides us nutrition. We can’t grow or raise our food any other way. This is also the most complicated element. We are all different! Therefore we have different nutritional needs and different energy needs for our fitness and health goals. Balanced nutritional intake is important for the following reasons: provides energy/fuel for our bodies, provides essential vitamins and minerals, can improve our immune system function and eating the right foods has been shown to help preventable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Since our food comes from this wonderful planet called Earth. We need to be more sustainable in our food choices and the way we farm our food. Now some might right away think of organic farming in this scenario, but that may not be a one fit solution. Sometimes organic farming requires more land and more water which are precious resources. Being more Earth conscious in our farming, harvesting, and watering helps all of us. We need to preserve this precious resource for future generations.
Some simple things we can do are the following:
eat more plants (fruits and vegetables)…farming animals requires land and water
make sustainable seafood choices...avoid those that are overfished
cut down on food waste...can contribute to greenhouse gas emissions
buy what's in season...lower pesticide usage to grow these crops
grow your own food...lowers carbon footprint
buy less plastic bottles
focus on eating staple foods
use reusable grocery bags when shopping
eat local

These are just some simple ideas that we all can implement to help keep planet Earth sustainable for future generations.
Nutrition is a necessary part of a healthy life. Just like we need to take care of ourselves to be healthy, we also need to take care of planet Earth so it can be healthy for future generations.
